Surat kepada Hishammuddin :Tindakan Keras Ke atas Laporan Palsu Utusan Malaysia (bm/en/cn)

Posted: 10 May 2011 10:46 PM PDT

YB Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein Onn,
Menteri Dalam Negeri,
Kementerian Dalam Negeri Malaysia. 11 Mei 2011

Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri,

Tindakan Keras Ke atas Laporan Palsu Utusan Malaysia Tentang Konspirasi Di Antara DAP Dan Paderi-paderi Kristian Di Pulau Pinang Untuk Menubuhkan Sebuah Negara Kristian Dan Melantik Perdana Menteri Beragama Kristian.

Sekian terima kasih.

Yang benar,

LIM GUAN ENG

KETUA MENTERI

Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri,

Stern action against the false and malicious reporting by the Utusan Malaysia on the purported conspiracy between the DAP and Christian pastors in Penang to establish a Christian State and to appoint a Christian Prime Minister.

The Penang State Government would like to officially request that YB Minister initiate stern action against the false and malicious reporting by the Utusan Malaysia on its front page story on 7th May 2011, which reported a purported conspiracy between the DAP and Christian pastors in Penang to establish a Christian State and to appoint a Christian Prime Minister.

This decision for this request was made collectively by members of the Executive Council of the Penang State Government (EXCO) in our meeting this morning, following the confessions of two UMNO Penang State Assemblymen, namely Hilmi Yahya (BN-Teluk Bahang) and Muhammad Farid Saad (BN-Pulau Betong) in the Penang State Assembly on 10th May 2011, that they too did not believe the purported Christian conspiracy being fanned by the Utusan Malaysia.

Seeing as there are two UMNO Penang State Assemblymen who do not believe the UMNO-owned newspaper's Christian conspiracy, it is clear that the Utusan Malaysia's reporting is nothing but lies and bordering on sedition. As proof of how dangerous and provocative the report is, there have been numerous police reports lodged by UMNO leaders against this purported Christian conspiracy.

For example, the demonstrations inspired by Penang UMNO Youth on 8th May 2011 had attacked the YAB Chief Minister on the purported Christian conspiracy, in addition to the opening of a toll-free alternative road. The State Government would like to put on record that we have no problem with a demonstration against the new toll-free alternative road in Jalan Bagan 29 – Jalan Siram on 8th May 2011.

The Penang UMNO Youth is welcome to support a tolled road. However, it is the State Government's stand that a toll-free road should be provided as an alternative. Contrasting views on such an issue is healthy in a democracy.

However, it is wrong and dangerous for Penang UMNO Youth to hold a demonstration to criticise with strong language against the YAB Chief Minister for his involvement in the purported Christian conspiracy, as there is no basis and substantive evidence to support such lies. Demonstrating on the basis of lies is not democratic but in fact a dangerous act that could potentially destabilise the country.

Christian pastors and the Christian Federation of Malaysia, a body that represents 90% of Christians in Malaysia, have refuted the purported conspiracy report. However, instead of retracting and apologising, the Utusan Malaysia have continued to fan the issue. Now, this false report has spread far and wide, causing anxiety and apprehension amongst peace-loving Malaysians.

The Penang State Government believes in freedom of information and freedom of press as basic tenets of human rights and democracy. However, this freedom does not allow you to print outright lies. This false reporting was conducted with malicious intentions, and could potentially inflame Malaysians through such bigoted and extremist sentiments.

Since there are now two UMNO Penang State Assemblymen who have professed their disbelief of the report by their party-owned newspaper, YB Minister must take stern and immediate action against the Utusan Malaysia. Besides ordering them to retract and to issue an apology for their false and malicious reporting, stern action must also be taken against the newspaper and the individuals responsible.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
LIM GUAN ENG
CHIEF MINISTER

Problems facing Indians can’t be solved overnight’

Posted: 10 May 2011 06:30 PM PDT

Source: Free Malaysia Today

Tarani Palani | May 10, 2011

Klang MP Charles Santiago believes that the problems plaguing the Indian community are deep-rooted.

PETALING JAYA: The problems of the Indian community are so deep-rooted that they cannot be fixed overnight, Klang MP Charles Santiago said today.

For example, he said that the Indian share of equity had remained stagnant although the Indians have been in the country for almost 150 years.

"In 2000, the Indian share of equity was 1.6% and in 2010 it was still 1.6%," he said.

He was commenting on a FMT article which said that PKR was taking initiatives to win back dwindling Indian support to the opposition.

He said that the Selangor government has been taking measures to address the community's plight.

"For example, the state government has been spending money on Tamil schools not only to help the weak students but also their parents," he said, adding that other measures included assisting single mothers, building houses for the poor and conducting kindergarten classes.

However, he claimed that the state government has limited budget, adding that the federal government should also chip in to help the community.

"The state had budgeted RM1.3 billion for this year. Half of it goes to payment of wages… the remainder is for development works… So what the state government can do is very limited."

PR stunts

Santiago also took a swipe at Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak for his outings to the Indian communities to mark their new year celebrations, saying that "30% to 40% of the community is involved in gangsterism, faces unemployment… these are the issue that need to be settled, and not wishing the community a happy new year".

He dismissed Najib's forays to win over Indian support as mere public relations stunts.

"Offering billions in short meetings with the Indians will not solve the community's problems," Santiago said.

Najib is scheduled to visit the Simpang Lima Tamil school in Klang on May 29 in what many political observers believe is an attempt to win back Indian support.

But Santiago issued a challenge to Najib to open a new Tamil school at a piece of land allocated by the state government nearby. The Simpang Lima Tamil school, with 2,300 students, is said to be overcrowded.

He also disagreed that the swing in Indian votes had caused Pakatan Rakyat to lose by-elections held in Hulu Selangor (Selangor), Bagan Pinang (Negri Sembilan), Tenang (Johor) and Merlimau.

The FMT article also quoted a PKR source as saying the party lost in the by-elections because it was not serious in tackling problems of the community.

However, Santiago said that the performance of the Selangor government in helping the Indian community cannot be judged by the outcome of the by-elections.

Trade and Health activists call on ASEAN Leaders to Defend Peoples’ Right to Health and Access to Medicines

Posted: 09 May 2011 11:51 PM PDT

JAKARTA- Trade and health activists came out with a joint open letter addressed to ASEAN leaders raising concerns over the negative impact of free trade agreements on peoples’ access to medicines and right to health.  Millions of people in ASEAN countries rely on affordable generic medicines to treat all kinds of diseases including HIV/AIDS, heart disease and cancer. According to the group, “the future supply of these life-saving medicines however is under threat from aggressive trade policies being imposed on developing countries in particular by the European Union and United States of America”.

“The assault on generic medicine production is taking a number of different forms, including bilateral free trade agreements, international treaties and customs regulations.” added the group. Of particular concern are the on-going EU-India FTA negotiations. The EU’s demand for stricter intellectual property right  (IPR) provisions under the FTA will seriously curtail the ability of India’s generic drug industry to produce and distribute more affordable versions of these life-saving medicines. Around 80-90 % of generic medicines in ASEAN come from India and so the EU-India FTA and with its IPR provisions will have profound effects as well on costs of medicines and treatment in the region. “Curtailing the production and distribution of affordable medicines would effectively leave people who desperately need these medicines without a lifeline” asserted the group.

They called on ASEAN leaders to ensure that our governments will not bow to political pressure from the European Union and the United States to trade away the safeguards enshrined in the TRIPS agreement or give into any other demands in current and future trade agreements that will threaten peoples' access to these life-saving generic medicines.”#
