Selangor Mahu Bantu Pusat Turunkan Kadar Jenayah

Posted: 02 Aug 2013 11:00 PM PDT

MBSA Edar 370 Topi Keledar Percuma

Posted: 02 Aug 2013 10:30 PM PDT

Selangor Tubuh Jawatankuasa Khas Bantu Pertingkat Kualiti Pengangkutan Awam

Posted: 02 Aug 2013 02:00 AM PDT

PKR : Polis Cegah Jenayah, Bukan Jaga Politik

Posted: 02 Aug 2013 01:30 AM PDT

Adakah Hussain Ahmad Najadi dibunuh kerana sebuah buku?

Posted: 01 Aug 2013 06:44 PM PDT

Pengasas Arab Malaysian Bank yang dibunuh telah mengarang sebuah buku bertajuk "The Sea and The Hills" baru-baru ini. Buku ini telah habis dijual di pasaran. Buku ini menceritakan kisah hidup beliau, bagaimana beliau dipenjara kerana mempersoalkan hutang seorang menteri yang lama tertunggak, kebangkitan Arab Spring, sistem demokrasi, politik dan demonstrasi. Kenapa PDRM begitu cepat mengatakan motif pembunuhan belliau berkaitan urusan jual beli hartanah?

Pembunuhan Hussain Ahmad Najadi Dirancang - Anak
1 Ogos 2013

KUALA LUMPUR: Pembunuhan pengasas Kumpulan Perbankan Arab Malaysia, Hussain Ahmad Najadi bukan disebabkan kegagalan urusan hartanah, tetapi telah dirancang lebih awal, demikian dakwa anaknya.

Pascal Najadi menafikan sebarang penglibatan bapanya dalam urusan hartanahsebelum kematiannya setelah jawatankuasa Tokong Kuan Yin memberitahunya bahawa bapanya merupakan perunding antara dua pihak di hari beliau ditembak.

By sharing his life, he hopes to create more understanding between Malaysia and the Arab world.
Tuesday May 7, 2013

It is the story of Hussain Najadi, a Bahrain-born commoner who founded the Arab Malaysian Development Bank. Hussain was born in 1938 in Bahrain's capital, Manama.

After being caught leading several demonstrations, he was told to leave the country when he was 18 years old (in 1956), and he opted to go to Germany, where his training and career in business began.

He does not shy away from talking at length about the rise of citizen movements like the Arab Spring demanding more democratic space in the Middle East.

[PRESS STATEMENT] Stop Sweeping Our Financial Dirt Under The ‘Off-Balance Sheet’ Carpet

Posted: 31 Jul 2013 11:21 PM PDT

PRESS RELEASE
1 AUGUST 2013

The latest downgrade by Fitch of Malaysia's outlook from "Stable" to "Negative" is a matter of grave concern though it should come as no surprise.

We have consistently maintained that the government's management of the economy particularly the profligacy in spending without proper safeguards of transparency and accountability will take us to the brink.

Prior to the 13th General elections, independent analysts had raised the red flag about our debt-to-revenue ratio of 237 per cent in 2012 and our over dependence on oil revenue but the UMNO-BN controlled media went to town to paint the critics as traitors out to destabilise the economy.

Instead of taking cognizance of the legitimate concerns and rectifying the situation, Najib has plunged the country into greater fiscal deficit, eating into our current account surplus and ignoring the clear signs of structural weaknesses.

How much longer does Najib want to be the proverbial ostrich in the sand by pretending that his administration's mismanagement of public finances has no significant impact on the economic outlook? No amount of creative accounting practices can change our financial red to black.

Thus, while the sharp rise in the Federal Government guaranteed debt to nearly RM150 billion in 2012 from RM96.9 billion in 2010 has not been factored in our budget deficit calculations, it cannot escape the radar of impartial economic and financial analysis.

In this regard, we call on Najib to stop hoodwinking the people by bragging about our so-called 'healthy debt-GDP ratio' when in reality it is a case of sweeping our financial dirt under the 'off-balance sheet' carpet.

Unless urgent remedial action is taken, it is clear that the promises made in the last elections about holding in trust public finances and more responsible fiscal management will remain hollow and the culture of reckless spending, opaque government procurement and privatisation processes and disregard for accountability remains the hallmark of Najib's 'transformation' government.

Let the government be warned that this cannot be allowed to continue. As the management of the nation's public finances is not a game of one-upmanship, we urge Najib to stop grandstanding and immediately step up to the plate to put the nation's and the people's interest above self and partisan interests.

ANWAR IBRAHIM

Dr M and the Malays

Posted: 31 Jul 2013 08:11 PM PDT

Malaysiakini

If some of you think that this nation is in a mess, then blame the Malays because they are the problem. Malays know that Malaysia is not the land of gold and honey any longer.

In these difficult times, they have become more aware of their surroundings; but one other person has noticed this sea-change in the Malays.

He is former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad. He knows that a thinking and independent Malay is detrimental to his legacy, his creation – Umno-Baru – and to the well-being of his family's fortunes. Today's self-aware Malay is Mahathir's downfall.

Malays are in positions of power in government and the civil service. They dictate policies and run the wheels of government; but Malays are also the nation's worst hypocrites.

They are greedy. They are happy with short-term solutions. They do not think of the consequences. They are happy to hide behind the cloak of race and religion if it will bring them some material benefit or status. The day they lose everything is probably the day they will regain their humility, values and self-respect.

With the downturn in the economy, Malays have noticed that jobs are hard to come by, that only the chosen Malays receive government tenders, and that the cost of living is increasing. Scholarships for the poor Malay child are snapped up by children of Umno Baru politicians and cronies, leaving only a few places for the needy.

Crime is rife and foreigners are a common sight in every community, schools and hospitals. The Malay market-trader has to compete with a foreigner, who is willing to work harder for less money. Children in the rural areas are disillusioned and difficult to motivate. Many drift to the cities looking for jobs, then find that there are no jobs, so they add to the Mat Rempit menace.

The most privileged section of the community also has the highest proportion of drug users. Why are Malays more prone to drug addiction? Are they trying to escape reality? People who volunteer in charitable organisations allege that Malays have the highest incidence of problems, ranging from domestic violence to sexually transmitted diseases, and sexual problems such as rape, incest and illegitimate children.

Corruption is killing the country, but Malays are quite happy with the RM50 or RM500 offered by Umno Baru. The muftis order ridiculous fatwas and Friday sermons are politicised, but few Malays voice their objections. If this were Indonesia, the Indonesians would have walked out of the mosques, in protest.

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation. If Indonesian women were subjected to acts of humiliation, many Indonesian women and men would have picketed to protest and demand that stern action be taken. Malay women would rather watch the latest TV soap.

Exacting vengeance

Malays are aware that government tenders above a certain value involve bribery but will they lodge complaints? Perhaps, they are aware that nothing will be done. The people who head these anti-graft bodies are Malay.

Malays know that cheating was rife in GE13 and in the by-election in Kuala Besut on July 24. It appears that Malays were more concerned about getting in the queue for their "travel allowance", than stopping corruption.

The hundreds of millions of ringgit should instead have been pumped into schemes to benefit the community. The scoundrels are the Election Commission (EC) chairperson and his deputy; both Malays. Men who lack principle and dignity are championed by Umno-Baru.

Umno Baru seems to be promoting the Malays, whereas Pakatan Rakyat appears to be inclusive of all Malaysians, but the irony is that the only way for Malays to prosper is to vote against Umno-Baru and ensure that Pakatan forms the next government.

Mahathir knows which buttons to push. He is good at making you react, he excels at getting your attention and is pleased when you become all worked up – his expertise is that of a master manipulator. Mahathir would have made a better psychiatrist than a general practitioner.

Those who claim that Mahathir's policies "help" the Malays, are wrong. What he does under the pretext of helping Malays is designed to have the opposite effect. He is exacting his own vengeance on the Malays. Sadly, the Malays are too blind or stupid to notice.

When Mahathir was a child, which traumatic episode in particular made him turn against the Malays? He appears to be torn between pleasing the Malays, so that he is accepted by them, but at the same time is driven by feelings of guilt, to redeem himself for being cast as an outsider.

Was he teased in the school playground and called derogatory names pertaining to his background? Was he ashamed of being registered as an Indian at medical school in Singapore? Despite having a Malay mother, did elite Malays, royalty and the community treat Mahathir as an outsider? Did an incident deprive Mahathir of a deep emotional connection with the Malay community, which fostered a deep seated envy of the Malays?

This week, Mahathir has again tried to pit Malays against Chinese, and vice-versa; he queried whether the Chinese wanted to share, or to seize power, in Malaysia.

The non-Malay colleagues or beneficiaries of Mahathir's largesse are silent. If they are angry with Mahathir, none would dare voice their objections publicly. Mahathir knows that patronage has its advantages, and its limits.

Poor-quality leaders

Today, we are a nation divided along racial and religious lines and all of us are to blame. From the beginning, Mahathir had a racist agenda. The Malays were mesmerised by Mahathir's spin but then, the non-Malays are not entirely innocent.

In the WikiLeaks cables released in April 2013, it was revealed that the US embassy expressed surprise that Mahathir had been appointed deputy PM in 1976, but they were probably more amazed by the lack of opposition from the non-Malays despite Mahathir's "Malay chauvinism".

Francis T Underhill Jr, the ambassador at the time noted that "… the small, predominantly Chinese Democratic Action Party (DAP) has expressed some concern over Mahathir's past record but has not openly opposed his selection. Other Chinese parties or politicians have either not commented or have welcomed Mahathir's appointment in a pro forma manner".

Malaysia does not have a Malay or a Chinese dilemma. Our only dilemma is Mahathir. His latest outburst about the Chinese seizing power is merely a side-show. He wants to deflect attention from the greatest show in Malaysia, the Umno Baru general assembly.

Behind the scenes, the Malays in Umno-Baru are positioning themselves, like pieces on a chess board. The rakyat's problem is that we have poor quality Malay Umno Baru leaders, who only want to maintain their vested interests.

Malays are the problem of this country but they could also be the solution. Right now, any aspiring Malay who wants to be leader must listen to the needs of the lower-income groups and families with aspiration. He must address concerns of the rakyat like illegal immigration, corruption, education and rising crime.

Nothing gives Mahathir a greater sense of schadenfreude than seeing the Malays suffer, despite the Ketuanan Melayu and Umno Baru.

Malaysia Worries Over a Crime Wave

Contract hits raise concern over rising street violence

Two contract-killing attempts – one successful – on Malaysian streets have focused attention and growing anger on perceptions of a worrying rise in violent crime in the country, turning it into a political issue between Malays and Chinese as well.

An alarmed Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak held a press conference to say the government is prepared to give the police whatever is needed to fight crime and expressed concern over the spate of killings, saying it affected public confidence and increased fear with regard to security and serious crime.

In the most spectacular incident, banker Hussain Ahmad Najadi, 75, the founder and head of Arab-Malaysian Development Bank, was gunned down along with his wife on the street as they walked to his car. Hussain was hit in the chest and lower abdomen and died on the spot while his wife was hit in the arm and leg. She survived the shooting.

The second shooting occurred on July 27 when a gunman riding pillion on a motorcycle pulled up next to a car occupied by R Sri Sanjeevan, the head of a local anti-crime organization called MyWatch, and shot him in the chest when the car stopped at a traffic light in a town in Negeri Sembilan state. Sanjeevan remains in critical but stable condition in a local hospital.

The two incidents are hardly similar. For instance, there is widespread conjecture that Hussain was killed over a land deal gone bad, and Sanjeevan had publicly said he had identified links between policemen and drug dealers, and that he intended to make them public, and unnamed forces on either side of that equation may have attempted to silence him.

However, the shootings tie in with the widening spread of violence including a series of contract killings, such as that in April of the Customs Department director general, Shaharuddin Ibrahim, who was shot dead at a traffic light while being driven to work. The department’s highest-ranking uniformed official and one who is believed to have gone after illegal schemes, his death is the focus of a task force that so far has turned up no suspects.

Nor are those alone. The Penang Institute has identified 38 gun murders between January and April of 2013, a shocking figure for a country unused to such carnage. Two street killings took place last week in addition to the shootings of Hussain and Sanjeevan. Street murders by gun have been averaging two a week, according to statistics. A 26-year-old Indian with a criminal record was shot and killed on the street today, according to local news reports.

The US State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security, in a report dated April 27, describes Malaysia as possessing an overall crime rate designated as “medium,” with most streets safe to walk at night, except around some suspect bars. The police, the report says, are a “national police force that is well trained and equipped.”

But, residents say, that paints a very optimistic picture. A growing number of Kuala Lumpur acquaintances of all races report fear of being on the streets. Many have been mugged, often by the opposite races. One Chinese friend reported being in a minor fender-bender with a Malay woman who pulled out her cellphone and made a call to someone who showed up a few minutes later with a gang ready for violence.

“It is as bad as people say it is,” said a longtime resident of the Kuala Lumpur suburb of Petaling Jaya. “Yes, the crimewatch guy was shot and is in serious condition. Even snatch thefts have become very violent. The gangsters – they are Chinese, they are Indians, they are Malays. This is because guns are so easily available. Across the border they come. Others blame the lack of enforcement of laws. They acknowledge we have good laws but the enforcement leaves much to be desired.”

As is almost inevitable in Malaysia, the issue has become another bone of contention being worried over by ethnic Chinese and Malays. Hussain’s suspected killer is alleged by police to be a gangster known as Sei Ngan Chai or Cantonese for “four-eyed boy,” a Chinese. The taxi driver who dropped him off near the scene of Hussain’s shooting has been arrested and identified him as the shooter.

“A Chinese killer will add to the anger,” an ethnic Malay acquaintance told Asia Sentinel. “And I tell you we are angry.”

Much of the focus is on Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s decision to ask for repeal of the colonial-era Emergency Ordinance which allowed for preventive detention, and, as the Petaling Jaya woman said, the easy availability of guns because of the porous border with Thailand. Many residents are demanding that the preventive detention measure be reinstated.

“Ever since the government abolished the Emergency Ordinances Act and released 2,000 hardcore criminals, violent crime has gone up,” the Malay acquaintance said. “There is murder by hired guns on a weekly basis. The police know who all these guys are, know all who are capable of committing such crimes, know all who have the network to commit such contract killing.”

Local media said police counted 67 serious crimes committed by former detainees within the first six months this year, a 100% increase from 33 cases reported in the corresponding period last year. The increase is said to have followed the release of 2,473 detainees in July 2012.

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has characterized the police force as understaffed, with one police officer for around 700 residents in any given area. The Democratic Action Party disputes that, saying the ratio is more like one to 250 residents.

DAP lawmaker Steven Sim, in a prepared release, charged that the police have plenty of manpower but that the force has been politicized and must be revamped to fight crime. The police budget, he said, had been increased by more than 65 percent from 2007 to 2012. But, he said, the additional officers had been steered into the Special Branch, the police intelligence arm, and the Special Task Force Department, which keeps an eye on political activity, while the number of line officers on the street has stagnated.

But, ethnic Malays charge, it’s the DAP that is responsible for the crime wave, by demanding that preventive detention continue to be off the books, and by preaching disrespect for the police.

“Opposition teaches people to rally on the streets break laws and kick the police. You teach children to disobey authority – police authority – and you expect the law to be enforced?”

"Saya teruskan perjalanan 20 minit kemudian.

PKR all set to fight new preventive law

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 11:04 PM PDT

Malaysiakini

PKR will strongly oppose any new version of an Emergency Ordinance (EO) because the BN has previously used such legislation to stifle political dissent rather than to fight crime.

Referring to reports of a new preventive law to tackle crime,  PKR vice-president N Surendran said today that such a law would pose “grave danger to the civil and political rights of all Malaysians”.

The law is reportedly being drafted by a committee headed by Minister Idris Jala, and is due to be tabled in Parliament in September.

“We will fight such laws at every stage of its tabling in the Dewan Rakyat, we will never surrender the fundamental rights of the rakyat," Surendran said in a statement.

"We call upon the prime minister to drop the intention of tabling such laws, and instead focus upon creating a better-trained and more efficient police force."

Surendran noted that, on one occasion in July 2011, the EO had been "misused" to arrest six PSM activists including a member of parliament.

“The police must also be freed from unnecessary political tasks on behalf of the BN, such as spying on and prosecuting opposition and civil society leaders and activists," he said.

"Using the police for these unconstitutional political tasks is a serious waste of resources and demoralises the police force."

Human rights activists and lawyers have also argued against a return to the EO era.

At a Proham forum, it was argued that existing laws, like the amended Prevention of Crime Act 1959, provide sufficient powers for the police to deal with serious crime.

Following a series of violent crimes, premier Najib Abdul Razak has mooted an EO-type law, in modified form, to enable the police to cope with such incidents.

The EO, which allowed the police to detain a suspect for two months without trial, was originally designed to enforce order after the May 13,1969 riots. It was abolished in 2011 and over 2,000 detainees were freed last year.

Kenapa Najib tak buat sidang khas parlimen perangi jenayah?

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 05:27 PM PDT

Winning Egypt’s Long War With Extremism

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 09:23 AM PDT

Huffington Post

In what looked more like a scene from “The Dictator” than real life, Egypt’s leading general and de-facto head of state Abdul-Fattah el-Sisi addressed cheering crowds in his full military fatigue and Gamal Abdel Nassir sunglasses on Wednesday. He congratulated them for “making their will known” to the world on June 30th (when mass protests began) and July 3rd (the day Morsi was ousted), and declared that “the will of the people” delegitimizes the results of elections. He then called on “all noble Egyptians” to march on Friday in the millions to give him “the popular mandate to fight terrorism.”

The Tamarrod campaign enthusiastically endorsed his call on their official Facebook page, encouraging Egyptians to support the army in “the coming war against terrorism” and its “cleansing” of the country, widely understood as references to cracking down on The Muslim Brotherhood.

The head of Egypt’s security apparatus does not need a popular mandate to pursue those involved in criminal activity. However, a ruling junta in the Arab world’s most populous country concerned with its global image does need the theatrics of “popular will” to use force to wipe out an entire political movement and its supporters, one that by the most conservative estimates comprises no less than a quarter of the Egyptian people. Not only is the general fanning the already white hot flames of anti-Muslim Brotherhood fervor in Egypt, but he is exploiting it to gain political cover for mass repression and violence. In the current climate of ultra nationalism and deep polarization, sadly, many Egyptians are all too willing to provide it.

Far from eradicating terrorism, such an approach would only empower those who call for violence against the state.

Unless Egypt’s military junta decisively corrects its current course, and pursues a peaceful, inclusive and reconciliatory approach to putting Egypt back on a democratic path, it will be feeding rather than draining militants’ ideological fuel.

This is because Al Qaeda was conceived in the prisons of Egypt, contrary to conventional wisdom, not the caves of Afghanistan. Gamal Abdel Nassir’s torture chambers produced Al Qaeda’s intellectual foundation, whose original target was not the United States, but corrupt Arab governments the superpower was seen as propping up. Sayed Qutb, whose writings inspired many militant groups, including Al Qaeda, was radicalized and eventually executed in Nassir’s jail. Decades later, Ayman El Zawahri, Osama bin Laden’s deputy and chief strategist, turned to militancy in these same confines, and went on to advocate for violence as the only way to correct perceived injustice.

The Egyptian people proved him wrong in the spring of 2011. Eighteen days of mass protests accomplished what decades of militancy could not: ridding Egypt of a thirty-year dictator. The January 25th revolt was the single greatest blow to Al Qaedaism since its bastard birth in Nassir’s jail. Islamists worked with liberals and leftists to rid their nation of a common enemy. When Iran’s supreme leader congratulated Egypt on its “Islamic Revolution”, it was the Muslim Brotherhood that corrected him. “This was an Egyptian People’s Revolution,” the Islamists declared. Former militants formed political parties, not terrorism cells, working within the system rather than seeking to destroy it. According to years of Gallup nationally representative surveys, while the majority of Egyptians (60 percent) said that “oppressed people can improve their situation through peaceful means alone” before the revolution, this number rose to 79 percent after it successfully ousted Hosni Mubarak, and to 85 percent after the first parliamentary elections. The January 25th revolution was a victory for not only “people power” but for peaceful means of change.

The threat to extremist ideology was apparently so acute that Ayman El Zawahri went out of his way in February 2011 to put out a statement responding to the Egyptian uprising, where he denounced democracy as unIslamic. It seemed that Egypt, the birthplace of Al Qaeda, would also be the land of its celebrated death.

After the military’s mass arrests and violent crackdown on supporters of the former president in the past weeks however, it might be El Zawahri who is celebrating.

In the early morning on Monday, July 8th, several days after the fall of Morsi, the military opened fire on a pro-Morsi sit in at the Republican guard leaving 51 dead, one soldier and 50 Morsi supporters. A grainy video of the incident shows people running in a panic as soldiers blast the crowd with gunshots. Human rights groups, such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, as well as Western media outlets, including theNew York Times, the Wall Street Journal and Foreign Policy Magazine, reported the military used excessive force. Within hours, the military issued a statement saying it acted in self-defense. In response to the incident the armed forces made a number of arrests — not of officers allegedly responsible for the incident as a nod to accountability and reconciliation — but of senior Brotherhood leaders, including the Supreme guide Mohammad Badie, on charges that they incited their own massacre.

With few exceptions, Egypt’s so-called “liberals” hardly object. Many formally anti-military activists and human rights NGO leaders, who have themselves witnessed violence against protesters at the hands of Egypt’s security apparatus, now fiercely defend the military, scorning dissidents in their ranks. With eerie irony, Tamarrod spokesman has stated that, “Nassir’s Egypt will not tolerate the continuation of Morsi’s Egypt” apparently glorifying a time in the country’s history when it was anything but a democracy.

If democracy were established, Egypt could still be Al Qaeda's ideological death bed. But if the military pursues its current path, the country also has the potential to become the site of the network’s philosophical second coming. This risk was made clear in a social media exchange I had with a prominent Egyptian blogger named Ali shortly after the Republican guard shooting.

Ali: “They’re pushing us to be extremists, if they kept arresting pres. Morsy & refuse every democratic process"

I responded in four parts:
“1. No one can force us to extremism. We have a choice. We must choose Islamic ethics over self defeating impulse. 1/4″
“2. Nothing would please your enemies more. Perfect pretense for mass repression and political exclusion. Choose wisdom. 2/4″
“3. Turning to extremism dishonors the blood of the martyrs. 3/4″
“4. Remember God said ‘don’t let a people’s hatred of you cause you to be unjust.’ God rewards patience. 4/4″

Ali:
“He also said “And if you punish an enemy, punish proportionally to that which you were harmed"[1]”

Me:
“Yes, within what is permitted. Responding in like in this case is wrong and unwise. Results disastrous.”

Ali:
“We are dying anyway, u should advise the one who kill not the victim”

Me:
“I have. See my timeline. They wish for nothing more than a pretense for more repression. Don’t give it to them.”

I might give Egypt's ruling generals, and their advisors in Washington and Brussels, similar advice: Ayman El Zawahri and those who agree with him wish for nothing more than a pretense for violence. Don't give it to them.

Dalia Mogahed is Chairman and CEO of Mogahed Consulting. With John L Esposito she co-authored “Who Speaks For Islam? What a Billion Muslims Really Think”

[1] The same verse goes to say, “But if you are patient – it is better for those who are patient.” It is understood to allow and limit Muslims to “proportional retaliation” in war, as opposed to massive or punishing retaliation, while encouraging forgiveness.

Zahid Hamidi kata kurang anggota punca jenayah sukar dikawal?

Posted: 30 Jul 2013 01:41 AM PDT

Hussain Ahmad Najadi sokong kebangkitan Arab Spring?

Posted: 29 Jul 2013 09:47 PM PDT

By sharing his life, he hopes to create more understanding between Malaysia and the Arab world.
Tuesday May 7, 2013

It is the story of Hussain Najadi, a Bahrain-born commoner who founded the Arab Malaysian Development Bank – yes, the bank with the camel mascot! – in 1975.

Hussain was born in 1938 in Bahrain's capital, Manama.

As Ahmad's only child, Hussain displayed the same rebellious streak and, in his youth, joined the increasing number of people agitating for more personal freedom and liberties in then Britain-ruled Bahrain, resulting in repeated detentions.

After being caught leading several demonstrations, he was told to leave the country when he was 18 years old (in 1956), and he opted to go to Germany, where his training and career in business began.

And then, at the height of his professional success, the boy who came from nothing to gain so much was thrown into jail. He had had the temerity to ask that a loan, nine years overdue, be paid back – the problem was, the loan had been made to very senior Bahraini minister.

Knowing the political situation in Bahrain – it had gained independence from the British in 1971 but remains a strongly controlled Constitutional monarchy – why did Najadi make his demand?

Perhaps it had something do with his formative years when, unlike his peers, he was a voracious reader, and he had the good fortune of reading not just capitalist tomes, but also works by socialists and communists and other characters that are considered radical for capitalist-leaning Bahrain.

"My dad did say that one day, those books are going to get me into trouble. And he was right," Najadi says with a laugh.

By a stroke of luck, he was able to obtain an Iranian passport and fled as soon as he was let out of jail. Until today, Najadi remains persona non grata in his homeland and cannot re-enter Bahrain.

He does not shy away from talking at length about the rise of citizen movements like the Arab Spring demanding more democratic space in the Middle East.

"Bahrain is in turmoil now, and it is also running out of oil. It has had the same prime minister for the last 42 years. In a way, you could say that the Arab Spring started from Bahrain, and spread onwards from there, though the tsunami has yet to reach its conclusion."

While Najadi's life has centred on finance, The Sea And The Hills is not about making money.

"I have a zero ROI (return on investment) target for this book, which is purely about fostering better understanding between countries and civilisations. Malaysians still misunderstand the Arab world, and whatever they know about it usually comes from Hollywood movies and other Western perspectives of the Middle East."

Najadi Tokoh Kewangan Tersohor Dengan Gaya Hidup Ringkas, Sederhana
Selasa Julai 30, 2013

The Sea and The Hills.

Dalam temu bual yang diadakan di pejabatnya yang serba ringkas dan sederhana, Najadi juga mendedahkan buku seterusnya akan bertajuk Decline of the West: The Enemy Within.

"Ia akan bercerita tentang bagaimana Barat jatuh melalui kemerosotan, seperti cara empayar Rome hancur, melalui kepuasan diri mereka sendiri," katanya.

Opposition will resist any government attempt to control internet

Posted: 29 Jul 2013 02:59 AM PDT

TMI

The opposition will resist any attempt by Putrajaya to restrict use of the internet, calling it a selfish attempt to undermine freedom of information so as to perpetuate Barisan Nasional’s (BN) hold on power.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said that the desperate attempt by BN to maintain its status quo would not succeed as the people had already spoken in the 13th general election by giving Pakatan Rakyat the popular vote.

He labelled the attempt as a violation of BN’s very own Multimedia Supercorridor Bill of Guarantees against internet censorship.

Lim questioned if this new "draconian" move was yet another failure of the ruling coalition’s policy following the abandonment of national reconciliation and 1Malaysia.

“The double standards and selective prosecution of punishing only those who attack Muslim sensitivities but not when non-Muslims are attacked is now followed by attacking internet use,” he said in a statement today.

Lim, who is also Penang chief minister, said the move was no different from “autocratic dictators desperately trying to cling on to power".

“How can internet bans help to prevent confusion that may arise as a result of internet defamation as mentioned by Ahmad Shabery, especially when there are double standards in punishing only opponents of BN but not when PR leaders are clearly defamed,” he said, referring to Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek's statement.

Ahmad Shabery said at a Ramadan gathering yesterday that internet defamation and similar ill-intentioned actions must be curbed before the situation deteriorated.

He added that his ministry would not hesitate to revise the internet facilities and access accorded to users in Malaysia, iterating that such move was to prevent confusion that might arise as a result of imprudent use of the internet.

"I see the misuse of the liberty given to users as reaching a critical level. It is about time we act firmly and sternly to restrain it," Ahmad Shabery said

Lim said that BN has failed to comprehend the yearning of the people for truth and freedom and quest for knowledge which was unfiltered by propaganda, racism and extremist ideologies.

He added that BN viewed the internet as a threat because the freedom and truth on the internet allowed lies, hate and fear to be quickly exposed.

“For example, BN's lies that my underaged son had sexually molested his female classmate were quickly exposed as a malicious lie when the internet identified the alleged victim's photo as a Hong Kong chess grandmaster who had never been to Penang and never met me or my son. Is this what BN is fearful of, that their lies, hatred and corruption will be exposed with internet freedom?” he said.

Anwar slams Home Minister’s quick dismissal of alleged police link to Sanjeevan shooting

Posted: 29 Jul 2013 12:51 AM PDT

TMI

Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim took Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to task for quickly dismissing police involvement in the shooting of anti-crime watchdog chief R. Sri Sanjeevan last Saturday.

“He should not be too quick in dismissing anything. He should allow police to carry out a thorough investigation first," said Anwar.

“This is the problem with Umno politicians. This is an assassination attempt and there is evidence of previous threats on the victim. I regret that this came from Zahid.”

Sanjeevan was shot while he was in his car in Bahau town with a friend. He is currently in stable but critical condition at the Seremban Hospital. He is scheduled to undergo surgery soon for a gunshot wound to his chest.

Anwar said police need to beef up security at the hospital where Sanjeevan is warded, adding that it was grossly inadequate.

He also urged Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar to ensure that the taskforce set up to investigate the shooting did not include policemen remotely related to the complaints made by Sanjeevan.

The police must also investigate Sanjeevan’s complaints of certain rogue elements in the force,” said Anwar at a Press conference held at the PKR headquarters in Tropicana, Petaling Jaya.

Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli, who was present, said Sanjeevan had told him that he was in possession of an internal memo with the “sulit” stamped on it, but he had not seen the list himself.

“Sanjeevan insisted there were a number of people on the list and that the offences were serious. These policemen were being probed for their alleged links to drug syndicates,” Rafizi said.

He said it was important not to preclude anything for now, and the probe by police must not just stop at this link, as the links with the underworld could also involve other parts of the home ministry.

“If Sanjeevan was to disclose the internal memo, it could provide a different perspective altogether on this issue of crime, particularly the relationship between underworld, police and possibly the home ministry,” said Rafizi.

Another PKR politician, R. Sivarasa, meanwhile said that looking at the manner of the shooting, it was clear that it was carried out by hired killers.

Sivarasa said Zahid and the IGP must appreciate the fact that former IGP Tan Sri Musa Hassan had come out clearly to say there is a connection between Sanjeevan’s shooting and his expose of policemen being linked to the underworld.

To date, only Sanjeevan’s friend who was with him during the shooting has been detained. That too, police had said, was related to a drug offence and not to the attack on Sanjeevan.

We condemn in the strongest terms the cold-blooded assassination attempt at R Sri Sanjeevan who has been on a mission to do what other crime watchers have failed to do. Sanjeevan has taken the bull by the horns and has risked his life because of his dedication and commitment to expose the nefarious dealings between the criminal underworld and certain rogue elements in the police force. This is a matter of national importance.

We believe the shooting in broad daylight is not an isolated event done by some stray criminals as stated by former IGP Tan Seri Musa Hassan may be part of a much larger, more insidious criminal network with the motive of silencing him.Three months back, Malaysians were distressed with the assassination of DatukShaharuddin Ibrahim the Deputy General of Customs in Putrajaya.

KEADILAN note that IGP Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar has pledged a thorough investigation and we cannot over emphasize the importance that it be conducted in the most professional and impartial way. There should not be anyone in the investigation team even remotely related to the complaints made by Sanjeevan.

Meanwhile, we call on the IGP to beef up the security arrangements at the hospital where Sanjeevan is being treated. Without going too much into the details, we know that the current security detail is grossly inadequate. We are certain that the threat still remains and the police must therefore step up the security for his safety immediately.

2) SUMMARY DISMISSALS OF ELECTION PETITIONS
We are greatly concerned with the spate of summary dismissals of the election petitions filed by Pakatan Rakyat candidates with regard to electoral fraud in the 13th general election.

To summarily dismiss these petitions purely on so-called technical grounds and ignoring the fact that the issues raised in the petitions are matters of public interest which have a direct bearing on the conduct of free and fair elections.

Some of the technicalities raised can be considered frivolous. For example; the petitions for Machang and Selising were struck off on the basis purportedly that the petition was not served personally by the petitioner himself on the respondents. This is quite ridiculous when everyone understands that parties in court act through lawyers and do not go around trying to serve court documents themselves!

Judges are also saying that the facts stated in the petitions are not sufficient. However I am advised that provisions also exist in the election law for any party to apply for particulars and for the court to direct provision of such details. Surely this would be a better way to handle disputes when such important issues of election abuses are raised regardless by whom whether BN or PR.

The second trend is awarding high costs on the petitioners when their petitions are struck off. Petitioners have been ordered to pay as much as RM120,000 in the case of BalikPulau.

I am informed by lawyers that such costs are not in line at all with the trend of costs awarded for similar civil litigation. For example similar preliminary objections in the High Court will probably be awarded RM5,000 to RM10,000. Full appeals in the Court of Appeal are awarded RM15,000 to RM 20,000.

Such high costs are oppressive bearing in mind the public interest nature of the litigation and invites the inference that there is a decided policy to inflict punitive costs to discourage petitions. Judge Hadhariah Syed Ismail handling BalikPulau was heard to say that the RM30,000 costs that were awarded for the DUN TelokBahang petition against the KEADILAN petitioner were not high enough and proceeded to award RM 120,000.

The rakyat must perceive the judiciary as an independent institution. If they find, as in the case of these recent election petitions, that the courts are making decisions to simply maintain the electoral status quo, and appear to be acting under direction of a particular party, they will lose all faith in the judiciary.

The pattern of punitive costs suggests that a discussion has taken place amongst the judiciary with a consensus to award such costs. Whether or not that is true, I call upon the Chief Justice TunAriffinZakaria to intervene to ensure that a more appropriate approach is taken towards awards of costs. Cost orders should reflect the fact that election petitions are public interest litigation. In any event, costs should be in line with similar civil litigation.

We are raising this issue because collectively the outcome of the petitions bears directly on the people's electoral rights and ultimately on the legitimacy to govern. At the very least, the dictates of justice warrant a full and proper trial.

We are not making frivolous claims. The people have a legitimate expectation that the fraud be exposed. The best forum for this is a court of laws. Is that asking too much?

3) SELECTIVE PROSECUTION OF PAKATAN RAKYAT'S LEADERS AND BLACK505 PARTICIPANTS
Today's charging of the 33 protesters for participating in the Black 505 DataranMerbok rally on June 22 is yet another classic instance of selective prosecution and thus constitutes an abuse of discretionary power by the Attorney General.

Likewise, this unconstitutional practice of selective prosecution has led to Members of Parliament Rafizi Ramli and Anthony Loke as well as other activists being charged under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (PAA) and the Sedition Act.
While scores of other cases involving corruption and criminal violence which truly warrant action by the AG are either swept aside or put on hold, this swift and overzealous effort to prosecute citizens and law makers alike exercising their constitutional right of assembly is deplorable and exposes a more insidious conspiracy by the government to silence the voices of freedom and justice. Prime Minister Dato Seri NajibRazak must be held accountable for these series of vindictive actions.

4) MASSACRE OF INNOCENT PROTESTERS AND NAJIB'S UTTER SILENCE
We wish to reiterate our call on all parties and nations to condemn Saturday's massacre of more than 100 pro-Morsi supporters and members of the Muslim brotherhood in Cairo. They must do everything in their power to put a stop to this carnage.

In this regard, the government's utter silence on the matter is shameful and totally inconsistent with a declared stand on transforming the nation on the path of reform and democracy. Malaysia's initial failure to condemn the military coup of a legitimately elected government was bad enough. Now, this lack of concern over the slaughter of innocent lives raises serious questions as to why this government has been so reticent in the matter.

Once again, we categorically condemn this bloodbath by the military and hold to account Army chief Gen Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the leaders of the present illegitimate interim government of Egypt.

[PRESS STATEMENT] Desak Polis Jalankan Siasatan Terperinci Dakwaan Penglibatan Anggota PDRM Terlibat Aktiviti Jenayah

Posted: 28 Jul 2013 10:25 PM PDT

KENYATAAN MEDIA

UNTUK EDARAN SEGERA
29 JULAI 2013

Kes Tembak: Rafizi dakwa Sanjeevan mahu dedah memo polis

Posted: 29 Jul 2013 01:10 AM PDT

KEADILAN tubuh j/kuasa siasat isu kenaikan tarif elektrik mendadak

Posted: 28 Jul 2013 11:00 PM PDT

28 Julai 2013

Tan Sri Musa Hassan mengesyaki cubaan membunuh R Sri Sanjeevan semalam, ada kaitan dengan rancangan Pengerusi Pasukan Khas Cegah Jenayah Malaysia (MyWatch) itu untuk mendedahkan sindiket jenayah melibatkan pegawai polis.

Bekas Ketua Polis Negara (KPN) itu membuat jangkaan demikian melalui akaun twitternya malam tadi, beberapa jam selepas Sanjeevan parah ditembak di Bahau, Negeri Sembilan.

"Saya harap polis membuat siasatan untuk mengesan suspek kerana dia (Sanjeevan) ada menerima ugutan bunuh berikutan hasratnya untuk mendedahkan pembabitkan polis dalam sindiket jenayah," katanya melalui akaun beliau, @TSMusaHassan.

Kapal perang diberi nama sempena seorang Ulama hebat

Posted: 28 Jul 2013 07:49 PM PDT

Posted: 28 Jul 2013 05:34 AM PDT

Sinar Harian

Anwar Ibrahim

Civilizational Studies Crucial To Promote Communal Understanding

Posted: 28 Jul 2013 05:32 AM PDT

Globally, civilizational studies are important to promote civilizational dialogue generally between the East and the West and particularly between Islam and the West. This has become crucial because of the growing gap between the two where the lack of understanding of Islam, together with other causes, has fuelled the rise and spread of Islamophobia.
While Chinese civilization including Confucianism and Indian civilization and its related subjects are equally important there appears to be less misperception in the West. The perception of Islamic civilization, on the other hand, has been ravaged by years of orientalist studies calculated to portray it in an unfavourable light compared particularly to Christian civilization. A long history of hostility and war not the least of which sprang from the Crusades contributed to this anti-Islamic fervour. And since 9/11, the distrust and misperception in the West grew exponentially and has contributed greatly to the widening chasm between the two.

Back in 1996, I had argued in The Asian Renaissance that this divide was fed by the erroneous assumption that the various civilizations are monolithic blocs diagonally opposed to each other. I still maintain that they are not. On the contrary, there is much compatibility between Asian values and Western values even as there are differences.

In our Malaysian context, issues of misunderstanding about Islam do impact on race relations in as much as stereotyping of Chinese, Indian and other communities likewise leads to unwarranted racial slurs and racist tendencies. In this regard, there can be no overstating the importance of civilizational studies across the board for all regardless of race or religion. I am in full agreement with any proposal that such a project be undertaken by competent, committed and professional teachers who are not only steeped in the discipline but also free from bias and prejudices. This indeed could be a tall order but if the authorities are serious about instilling better understanding, then they must take into account all suggestions to make it work.

The communal issues affecting the nation may derive some positive impact from a deeper and broader understanding of the various civilizations in Asia but at the end of the day, it is a problem that cannot be addressed just in lecture halls. The discourse should be extended to the public sphere and in this regard, the Islam/Confucianism dialogues that I had initiated during my time in government were intended precisely to foster better understanding between the two civilizations. Needless to say, all these efforts will come to nothing if we continue to have a government which says one thing but does exactly the opposite when it comes to communal relations. The persistent use of the UMNO-BN controlled media to facilitate the incitement of hatred, distrust and animosity is a classic case of this double-faced policy. Similarly, the racial indoctrination of university students by the BTN shows up the hypocrisy of the government in touting its transformation programs.

Finally, to suggest that since Islam had its origin as a religion in the Middle East, its inclusion in the course on Asian civilizations needs to be justified is petty and misconceived. It should be obvious that the term 'Middle East' is not cast in stone and for all intents and purposes a manifestation of the Eurocentric view of looking at the world. Before the First World War, they called it the Near East as, say, opposed to the Far East. From the Asian perspective, we can justifiably call the region West Asia, and semantically that settles the problem. But yet it is misconceived because Islamic civilization studies cannot be confined just to its place of origin regardless whether you call it the Middle East or West Asia. Are we suggesting that the hundreds of millions of Muslims in Pakistan and India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia, not to mention the millions in Central Asia and Xinjiang, are not part of the Islamic civilization?

Malaysia memang aman, tapi untuk penjenayah

Penjenayah memang bermaharajalela sekarang.

Crime Rate in Selangor Reducing?

What is the crime rate in Selangor? Reducing they say, but my office gets calls everyday. About crime in the area, and now the people have started to call my hand phone to complain about suspicious characters in their neighborhood. I resend them to the Chief Police Officer of Selangor but no reply.

Police Threaten Sedition Act on Those Who Spreads the Photos of 'Toilet Canteen'

Now he talks about sedition, I wonder what he would do if it was his own children. We must not tolerate this kind of school management, with Head Master deciding in such a callous way. He should explain and the Ministry of Education must be seen to take action.

No More EO Excuses

As to  Thevigan, you please pay attention to the crime rate in SELANGOR, no more excuses about the EO (Emergency Ordinance) being removed, instead use the police act which has wide range powers to curb crime in the state.

The people will use the media to highlight their problems, and people like Thevigan should not threaten them with sedition.
