GEORGE TOWN: Though held for only five days, the solo art exhibition by impressionist artist Chong Hon Fatt, 68, is drawing throngs of visitors.
Titled Duo Heritage Site Oil Exhibition, Chong's 40 paintings depicting heritage sites in China and George Town are currently on display at the Equator Academy of Art gallery in Leith Street until today.
Chong said the paintings would be taken to Ipoh for an exhibition from Friday to Sunday in conjunction with the World Hakka Conference.
"I was commissioned by the local authorities of Yong Tin district in Fujian Province in China to do a series of paintings on the heritage sites there for an exhibition in conjunction with the world conference," said Chong who has a penchant for painting heritage sites.
"I made five trips to China over a 10-month period starting last year and was taken to various heritage sites in Yong Tin by the organisers," added Chong.
Coincidentally, Yong Tin and George Town were declared Unesco World Heritage Sites on the same day.
Self-taught, Chong's style of painting using thick swatches of colour was greatly influenced by the maestro Vincent Van Gogh.
"I always draw in sunlight as it makes me feel the warmth of the sun, besides giving the paintings the necessary toning and depth."
After decades in the art scene, Chong has accumulated about 2,000 paintings including seascapes and landscapes.
State Town and Country Planning, Housing and Arts Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai officiated at the opening. His office is also the co-organiser together with the Penang Khek Association, North Peninsula Malaysia Yungting Association and the Argyll Road and Transfer Road Village Security and Development Committee.
The gallery is open from 11am to -6pm. Admission is free. For details, call 04-229 9603 or 012-431 7015. -- By Paul Toh
