Bank union says government popularity waning over rising living costs

By Yow Hong Chieh
September 06, 2011
KUALA LUMPUR, Sep 6 — The National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) said today it will embark on a roadshow to highlight the widening income gap between clerical workers and management at Maybank Bhd, adding that the Najib administration's popularity was waning because of inflation and cost of living issues.
NUBE secretary-general J. Solomon said today the union, which represents some 30,000 clerical staff in the banking sector, had no choice but to hold the roadshow after Datuk Seri Najib Razak's prolonged silence over its pay dispute with Malaysia's largest bank.
"The silence of the prime minister to act on complaints against Maybank, a government-linked company (GLC), will not endear him to the public," Solomon said in a statement.
"Maybank is boldly and brutally violating international standards of human rights, making a mockery of Malaysian laws, and making wider an already huge income divide."
He warned that the alleged exploitation of workers and the undermining of trade union rights by Maybank would have a direct impact on bank workers and could spread to all Malaysian workers if such practices are not stopped.
NUBE has been in dispute with Maybank over bonuses since June 2009.
The union is seeking an 80-month bonus for its members based on the rationale that NUBE members should receive the same eight-month bonus that the bank's senior managers and contract officers had been receiving annually for the past 10 years.
Maybank's in-house union, the Maybank Non-Executive Employees Union (Mayneu), has alleged that the "sudden demand" for the 80-month bonus was a ploy by NUBE to stop its members from joining Mayneu, which was set up in January.
Solomon also said today that the Najib administration's growing unpopularity could be attributed to the "yawning gap" between the rich and the poor, rapidly rising inflation and the exploitation of workers by large corporations.
"With massive anti-union activities, reduced rights and diminishing real income levels, Malaysians are frustrated and this feeling is boiling over," he said.
"Government policies are catered towards businesses growing. This, by itself, is the right thing to do but it is being done at the expense of Malaysian workers."

“This is provided for the voter registration assistant registrars and the public, whereby the assistant registrars appointed by the EC can download the Form A according to their needs,” he said.

Before this, they had to obtain the forms from the offices of the state election directors.

Kamaruddin said Malaysian citizens aged 21 and above who had not yet registered as voters, could download and fill Form A. However, they are required to keep a copy for themselves before submitting the downloaded form to the EC voter registration counter.

No perverse logic for Malaysian univeristies to get better world rankings.

Posted: 06 Sep 2011 01:15 AM PDT

DAP National Deputy Chairman and MP for Kepong Dr Tan Seng Giaw calls on the Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin to help Malaysian
universities to be truly competitive. He must compare our varsities with better ones.

On 6.9.2011, Dr Tan refers to Khaled's view on the competitiveness of Malaysian universities.

That Univerisity of Malaya, UM, is ranked 167 in the QS World University Rankings 2011/12 is encouraging. Its Vice-Chancelor wants it to get to 100 by 2015. This is achievable. If Hong Kong University is nombor 22, why can't UM be at the same position gradually?

The minister talks about being compettitive as seven Malaysian univerisities are in the top 600 out of 30,000 univerisities globally. A true comparison means comparing with better-ranked univerisities.

Previously the Government used the perverse logic of devlopment programme and national priority to explain the poor rankings of Malaysian universities. Now, it appears that the minister is recognizing the need to avoid this type of perverse logic as he says the recent QS World University Rankings has shown that Malaysian varsities are competitive. Prime Minister Najib's performance indices and result oreintation mean comparing with those who are better than us.

In 1982, I asked in parliament, why the the British Medical Council withdrew its recognition of UM medical degree. The answer was that the Government had its own development programme. This type of perverse logic exists for many years. Khaled's statement shows that there is light at the end of the tunnel. At least, we hope so.

One thing the minister can do is to find out why USM, after having been awarded the Apex Status, its ranking drops from 309 to 335. Once the weaknesses are identified, it can strive to attain a better ranking.

Cambridge University tops the Rankings, followed by Harvard, MIT, Yale and Oxford. These are private universities. As the minister has said, private universities in the country should be ranked.
