2011 DAP Wesak Day Message By DAP Secretary-General And MP For Bagan Lim Guan Eng In Kuala Lumpur On 17.5.2011

This year's Wesak Day's theme as announced by the Malaysian Buddhist Association of, “Cultivate Loving Kindness, Foster Harmony” reminds us that love and blessings is not just for Buddhists but for all mankind including Muslims, Christians and Hindus.

Only if we cleanse hatred from our hearts and fill our soul with love can we find peace, balance and harmony with our lives and with each other. For this reason DAP calls on all Malaysians to stand up for peace and harmony by uniting against extremists and harmony that wants to see Malaysia burn with hatred and violence.

Malaysians are shocked and outraged at the inaction by the Home Ministry against UMNO-owned paper Utusan Malaysia, for publishing dangerous lies of a Christian conspiracy with DAP to set up a Christian state, that is clearly intended to incite hatred against Christians. The BN government has also refused to act against Perkasa's Ibrahim Ali for making Christians an object of hate by calling for a crusade(perang jihad) against Christians. Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishamudin Tun Hussein Onn even refused to call Ibrahim Ali an extremist for launching this crusade against Christians.

Whatever our political beliefs, the time has come to unite against such dangerous extremism and racism. DAP is willing to work with all Malaysians including non-UMNO component members in BN to oppose this crusade and demand action against Utusan Malaysia and Ibrahim Ali's reckless opportunism and irresponsible adventurism.

Are non-Malays and non-Muslims an easy target to be blamed and kicked around based on lies just to distract attention from the real problems affecting 27 million Malaysians? Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin signalled the inevitability of price hikes when he announced yesterday that the country could no longer maintain the current subsidies which has doubled this year from RM10.32 billion to RM20.58 billion, with RM18 billion for petroleum-related sectors.

Instead of addressing the failure to remove gas subsidies benefiting Independent Power Producers(IPPs) that cost RM 19 billion annually, Perkasa is allowed to distract attention by talking of a crusade against Christians. The price hikes and difficult economic livelihood of the people are real issues that must be addressed.

Whether in Cabinet or outside Cabinet, the time has come for all Malaysians whether Muslims or non-Muslims to stand together to reject hatred unequivocally, abhor extremists and universally condemn violence. We must all pray and speak up for peace and harmony, prosperity and justice, public accountability and good governance.

UMNO’s Refusal To Act Against Perkasa and Ibrahim Ali Confirms UMNO’s Protection And Support For Perkasa (en/cn))

UMNO's Refusal To Act Against Perkasa and Ibrahim Ali's Incendiary Crusade Against Christians Because Perkasa Does Not Represent All Malays Confirms UMNO's Protection And Support For Perkasa To Incite Hatred Against Christians And Create Enmity Amongst Peace-Loving Malaysians.

UMNO's refusal to act against Perkasa and Ibrahim Ali's incendiary crusade against Christians by reason that Perkasa does not represent all Malays confirms UMNO's protection and support for Perkasa to incite hatred against Christians and create enmity amongst peace-loving Malaysians. This is a weak excuse by UMNO because if action is only taken based on the strength of your representation not the nature and ill-intent of your violence, why then act against terrorists because they also do not represent all the Malays?

This latest justification by Minister of Home Affairs Datuk Sri Hishamuddin Tun Hussein Onn why no action is taken against Ibrahim Ali only confirms that Perkasa is UMNO's alter-ego. When Ibrahim Ali launched his crusade against Christians in Gombak organised by the Komuniti 1Malaysia group of Kampung Kerdas and Kampung Changkat in Gombak, Umno Gombak chief Abdul Rahman Kamaruddin, his deputy, Abdul Aziz Jantan, and division information chief Ismail Ahman was also there to lend their support.

Ibrahim Ali had justified his crusade on the false accusations by Utusan Malaysia that the Christians "challenged the sovereignty and dignity of Malays and Muslims." by wanting to form a Christian state and appointing a Christian Prime Minister. The failure of the Home Ministry to act sternly against Utusan for printing this dangerous lie has only emboldened extremists like Ibrahim Ali who now wants to launch a holy war or crusade against Christians.

This dangerous lie by Utusan Malaysia has given a golden opportunity to extremists like Ibrahim Ali to make Christians the object of hate and incite enmity amongst Malaysians. Hishamuddin even went one step further in defending Perkasa and Ibrahim Ali by refusing to brand Ibrahim Ali an extremist for calling for a crusade against Christians! Just imagine if any Christian had called for a crusade against Muslims, he or she would have been arrested immediately.

Ibrahim Ali had also declared his loyalty to UMNO and his meetings with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. How much more evidence do we need to show that UMNO and Perkasa is one and the same to entrench Malay support for UMNO to win the next general elections?

There is no point for other BN component parties such as Gerakan or MCA to make press statements only in the non-Malay media asking for action against Ibrahim Ali when they know that none will be taken. So far no Gerakan or MCA Ministers have dared to press for a Cabinet decision insisting that Cabinet acts firmly against racists and extremists seeking to burn one Malaysia with this dangerous lies.

DAP calls on all peace-loving Malaysian regardless of race and religion to unite against such extremists who dare to use the language of violence because of inaction or even tacit support by the BN government. All of us should pray regardless of our faith that truth will prevail and peace maintained in our beloved country.

2011 Penang Wesak Day Message By Penang Chief Minister(en/cn)

2011 Penang Wesak Day Message By Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng In Komtar, George Town On 16.5.2011

Wesak Day is celebrated by wishing blessings not just for Buddhists but for all mankind including Muslims, Christians and Hindus. Praying for peace and harmony, prosperity and justice, public accountability and good governance is not enough. Malaysians must also act by speaking up together that as we see each other as Malaysian brothers and sisters who firmly reject hatred, unequivocally abhor extremists and universally condemn violence.

Penangites are very concerned at the specific targeting of the Christian community with dangerous lies by the UMNO-owned newspaper Utusan Malaysia that DAP and Christian priests want to set up a Christian state and appoint a Christian Prime Minister. Instead of taking action against Utusan Malaysia for spreading such dangerous lies, the BN government and Home Ministry has allowed these dangerous lies to continue until Perkasa's Ibrahim Ali is launching a crusade against Christians.

This threat of violence and war is anathema to all peace-loving Malaysians. By failing to take firm action against Ibrahim Ali for his threats of a crusade, the 1 Malaysia slogan of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is empty and meaningless to be used only to mislead Malaysians for votes.

The time has come for Malaysians to stand up for peace and step out with each other on the common principle that no one should be discriminated based on race or religion. Just because of the colour of his skin, everything he does is wrong. Just because of the gods she pray, every lie said against her is justified. This is not only unacceptable to all moral and religious teachings, it is inhumane as well.

Even though Christians and not Buddhists are targeted by UMNO and Utusan Malaysia this time, what is there to stop Budhhists and Hindus from being the next targets in future. Remember the famous quotation by the anti-Nazi and prominent Protestant pastor Martin Niemöller (1892-1984) who said:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out –
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out –
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out –
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me

DAP calls on all peace-loving Malaysian regardless of race and religion to unite against such extremists who dare to use the language of violence because of inaction or even tacit support by the BN government. All of us should pray regardless of our faith that truth will prevail and peace maintained in our beloved country.

Pirates of the Peninsula and BN’s rising prices

Posted: 17 May 2011 07:13 PM PDT

Source: Malaysia Hronicle

Written by  Selena Tay, Malaysia Chronicle

(1 Vote)

Pirates of the Caribbean starring Johnny Depp is going to be a summer blockbuster in our local cinemas. But in the Malaysian political scene we have BN’s own production, Pirates of the Peninsula starring Najib and Co on our daily screens. Here, rape, pillage and plunder of the nation’s coffers continue unabated due to corruption and lack of transparency and accountability.

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s statement that the BN Government is hardpressed to maintain the subsidy costs is a hint that there may be more price increases to come. However, he tried to tone down the severity of his statement by saying that the government will try not to burden the rakyat or populace.

This is a smokescreen from the BN Government because any subsidy cut will surely lead to a rise in the cost of goods especially basic necessities, which in turn will lead to the rakyat having to cope with an increase in the cost of living.

Muhyiddin must think that the rakyat has no knowledge of basic economics.

DAP MP for Klang Charles Santiago informed Malaysia Chronicle that right now the cost of living has gone up by leaps and bounds and the price of RON 95 petrol may go up very soon.

“With the rising cost of living, the BN Government should implement the Minimum Wage Policy immediately with the minimum wage being set at between RM1,500 to RM2,000. People are constantly struggling to make ends meet and my constituents are telling me to raise up this matter in Parliament as they are finding it tough to cope with the daily price rises,” said Charles.

Completely neglected the economy

No matter how Muhyiddin tries to wing it, the whole economic malaise is due to the BN Government’s mismanagement of economic policies and also due to spending most of their waking hours trying to destroy Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Pakatan Rakyat coaltion.

The Klang DAP MP also suggested that for the immediate measure, the BN Government should give cash aid of at least RM500 to the rakyat who earn below RM1,500 to help them tide over the period of waiting for the Minimum Wage Policy to be implemented. The subsidy cuts should only be implemented after the implementation of the Minimum Wage Policy.

It can also be seen that the BN Goverment is dragging their feet over the implementation of this Minimum Wage Policy. This despite the BN’s People First slogan, slammed Charles.

The BN Government is also up to their necks trying to stem the domino effect of spiralling inflation. Wages are depressed due to the overwhelming presence of cheap foreign labour and this leads to poor purchasing power amongst the lower income group.

All-out effort to discredit Buku Jingga

According to the political opposition, their Buku Jingga or book of economic reforms contain solid measures to solve the nation’s economic woes. This has caused much anxiety in the BN camp and their media and economic experts have been instructed to slam the ideas in Buku Jingga as having the potential to bankrupt the nation.

The BN Government too cannot deny it has been spendthrift. The leakages reported in the Auditor-General’s Report amounting to RM28 billion and the megabucks corruption in its huge white-elephant projects e.g. Port Klang Free Zone (amounting to over RM12.5 billion) have shocked the nation.

Malaysia Chronicle also spoke to PAS Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar, who said it was timely BN admitted that they are unable to solve Malaysia’s economic woes and are clueless on how to steer the economic ship.

“From this the rakyat should be able to evaluate BN’s economic know-how and ability to manage the nation’s coffers,” said Mahfuz, who is also the PAS vice-president. He was referring to Muhyiddin’s conceding that the BN government had no choice but to cut subsidies and raise prices.

New alphabets TEM for Najib’s economic soup

According to Mahfuz, Pakatan-held states of Kedah, Kelantan, Penang, Selangor and even Perak (during the Pakatan government’s 11-month tenure), had managed to be thrifty and channeled the savings obtained through prudent financial management towards programmes benefitting the rakyat.

When PAS took over Kelantan, it was the 3rd poorest state in Malaysia but now it is the 6th poorest. It may not seem much but this improvement took place despite Kelantanese being denied their rightful oil royalty payments and Federal aid.

Kedah too has lessened the collection of unpaid Quit Rent and although this amounted to less revenue for the state amounting to about RM50 million, the state has still managed to stay afloat via implementing prudent and thrifty measures.

Selangor and Penang are clearly doing much better than during the BN’s tenure, although all the Pakatan state governments have had to service and bear the losses inherited from BN rule.

“The BN Government overspent by creating useless white elephant projects. The confession by the BN Government via Muhyiddin’s statement should be enough for the rakyat to wake up to the reality of BN’s incompetency and vote them out in the fast-approaching 13th General Election,” added Mahfuz.

It looks as though Prime Minister Najib Razak needs another acronym to define his economic programmes, and according to Pakatan, it is none other than TEM – which stands for Terrible Economic Mismanagement!
